Alumina screws, also called alumina ceramic screws or bolts, are threaded fasteners made from aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) technical ceramic. They are selected for assemblies that require electrical isolation, non-magnetic hardware, dimensional stability at elevated temperatures, or resistance to environments where metal fasteners may oxidize, seize, corrode, or introduce contamination.
Alumina Screws Benefits
- Electrically insulating — volume resistivity >10¹⁴ Ω·cm, so the fastener does not conduct or provide a current path (dielectric strength depends on grade, typically ~10–17 kV/mm).
- High-temperature stable — alumina holds up where metal oxidizes and plastic creeps; material no-load limit is ~1500–1750°C by grade, but service temperature under clamp load is lower and application-dependent.
- Corrosion & contamination resistant — stable against most acids, alkalis and oxidizing media (HF excepted) and low metal contamination for clean/vacuum work.
- Non-magnetic — suitable where magnetic metal parts are a problem.
- Made to grade & drawing — offered in 96/99/99.5/99.7% grades with custom thread, head and length.
- Brittle — must be torqued to ceramic limits, never metal-screw torque (see Usage).
Alumina vs Metal, Plastic and Other Ceramic Screws
| Fastener option | Electrically conductive? | Typical thermal capability | Selection notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alumina (Al₂O₃) ceramic screws | No; electrically insulating, with typical volume resistivity above 1 × 10¹⁴ Ω·cm | High; unloaded material references are commonly around 1,500–1,650°C, depending on grade | Hard, corrosion-resistant and dimensionally stable, but brittle and unable to yield like metal. Best suited to joints requiring electrical isolation, heat resistance, non-magnetic hardware or reduced metal contamination. Tightening torque and load must be reviewed for the ceramic thread. |
| Metal screws—stainless steel, Inconel or titanium | Yes | Moderate to high, depending on alloy | Strong, tough and more tolerant of impact, bending and tightening torque. However, metal conducts electricity and may oxidize, seize, corrode or introduce metallic contamination under certain operating conditions. |
| Engineering-plastic screws—PEEK, PTFE or PPS | No; generally electrically insulating | Limited to moderate, depending on polymer, load and exposure time | Lightweight and more forgiving during installation. Suitable for lightly loaded insulating joints, but creep, aging, chemical exposure and loss of strength must be considered at elevated temperatures. |
| Zirconia (ZrO₂) ceramic screws | No; generally electrically insulating | Moderate | Usually tougher and more damage-tolerant than alumina, but has a different temperature, dimensional-stability and cost profile. Suitable where greater fracture resistance is more important than maximum thermal capability. |
| Silicon carbide or silicon nitride screws | Varies by material and grade; silicon carbide may be semiconducting | High | Used for different mechanical, thermal, wear or chemical requirements. They should not be treated as direct substitutes for alumina without reviewing electrical behavior, material grade, joint design, load and operating environment. |
Note: These are typical material-level references, not guaranteed limits for finished fasteners. Final performance depends on material grade, screw dimensions, thread geometry, mating components, tightening torque, mechanical load, atmosphere, chemical media and thermal cycling.
